Edisi mendatang Linux komunitas asuhan Red Hat: Fedora 10 yang dijadwalkan rilis pada tanggal 28 Oktober 2008, kini sudah tersedia edisi dini guna di ujicoba publik. Dengan nama Cambridge, Fedora versi 10 ini mengemas kernel Linux 1.6.27, RPM 4.6, lingkungan desktop edisi terkini baik GNOME 2.24 maupun KDE 4.1.

Penambahan perkakasan sekuriti 'sectool' bersama F10 akan menyederhanakan dan memudahkan admin dalam mengkonfigurasi dan melakukan uji pengamanan sistim. Sectool yang dibangun modular memungkinkan penambahan fitur baru lebih mudah. Dengan demikian nantinya berbagai topologi jaringan yang tidak umum juga dapat ditangani.

Peningkatan yang lain di Fedora Alpha1 ini termasuk pengelola jaringan 'Network Manager' yang memungkinkan konfigurasi jaringan nirkabel, perbaikan pada proses boot dan dukungan untuk Webcam lebih baik.

Penyertaan OpenChange akan membantu perusahan integrasi dengan Microsoft Exchange. Berkat libmapi dimungkinkan aplikasi seperti Kdepim atau Evolution mengakses Maicrosoft Exchange Server.

Fitur-fitur baru yang telah disetujui untuk disertakan bersama Fedora 10 Cambridge, dirinci sebagai berikut:

1. Connection Sharing
Connection sharing allows to easily set up an ad-hoc wifi network on a machine with a network connection and a spare wireless card. If the machine has primary network connection (wired, 3G, second wireless card), routing is set up so that devices connected to the ad-hoc wifi network can share the connection to the outside network.

2. Glitch Free Audio
The PulseAudio sound server has been rewritten to use timer-based audio scheduling instead of the traditional interrupt-driven approach. This is the approach that is taken by other systems such as Apples CoreAudio and the Windows Vista audio subsystem and has a number of advantages, not the least in reduced power consumption, minimization of drop-outs and flexible adjustment of the latency to the needs of the application..

3. OpenChange
Natively access Microsoft Exchange using OpenChange. By using the libmapi library from OpenChange, tools such as kdepim and Evolution can become first-class clients of a Microsoft Exchange Server.

4. Security Audit
A new security too will be added to Fedora 10, called sectool. sectool is a security tool that can be used both as a security audit and an intrusion detection. It consists of set of tests, library and textual/graphical frontend. Tests are sorted into groups and security levels. Admins can run selected tests, groups or whole security levels.

 

5. Better Webcam Support
Currently many webcams do not work with Fedora out of the box even though Linux driver exist for them, the intent is to fix this.

6. Better Remote Support
A new graphical frontend will be developed to make it easy to connect and configure Infra-Red remote controls. Users will be able to remotely control multimedia applications such as rhythmbox and totem with this feature.

7. RPM 4.6
The new major RPM version (after years) will add a lot of new feature, replacing the old RPM 4.4

8. Haskell Support
Haskell is a growing programming language, Fedora 10 will have a better support for it, adding a lot of packages for the language itself and many softwares written in Haskell.

9. Artistic 1.0 License Removal
This is not a feature as we classically think but it will bring a lot of polish in the license ecosystem removing all packages licensed only under the Artistic 1.0 license.


Sudah tentu Proyek Fedora yang dijadikan ajang experimen fitur-fitur baru nantinya belum dipastikan akan langsung berjalan mulus saat rilis. Jadwal rilis yang pendek juga tidak memungkinkan harapan itu. Namun seperti pada rilis-rilis sebelumnya, perbaikan 'rawat jalan' senantiasa dilakukan. Media Fedora 9 baru saja dibangun ulang dengan re-spin pertama (F9r1 ) yang menyertakan perbaikan sampai dengan 18 Juli 2008, sementara Fedora 8 telah di re-spin untuk ke 3 kalinya (F8r3 ).
