After 3 months of development we are proud to announce the immediate availability of the sidux-2007-01 “Χάος release” for i686 systems, shipping in a ≈ 700 MB full KDE flavor. REVIEW: - TuxMachines: Testdriving Sidux 2007
2007-03-01: So, all in all, Sidux did fairly okay on the hardware aspect, and the software included worked well too. I was disapppointed OOo was version 2.0.4 and KDE was 3.5.5. It's kinda a drag these days to have to mess with browser plugins and multimedia codecs yourself. I haven't read the site all that closely, but I think they have this "only free software" philosophy going on.
sidux is a full featured live and installable CD based on the Sid (unstable) branch of Debian GNU/Linux. It is always bleeding edge technology, packed into a tested and stable combination which is ready for use. sidux is moving very fast, so it will always bring you the hippest and most interesting developments first.
Originally created by a group of developers who split from the KANOTIX project and launched their own distribution to do the impossible--make Debian Sid stable.
The sidux team will provide three to four carefully balanced Sid snapshots each year, together with easy and fast installation options; while striving to properly package and contribute all suitable work back to Debian. The distribution will be enriched with a properly patched version of the most recent kernels, improved hardware detection, ready to go drivers, helpful scripts, and anything useful.
sidux detects and enables you to instantly use more hardware than any other operating system today without the need to search for drivers from hardware vendors' web sites or complicated installation routines.
sidux is also a base system for further customizations and adaptations to special needs (laptop, desktop, server or special purpose workstation). It can be used in private and corporate surroundings and makes a fine platform for appliances. It will always remain a 100% Debian Sid compatible system, giving you direct access to the world's largest repository of software packages (more than 17.000) which are all free and open source.
sidux is one of the few operating systems where you can get a 64-bit system with real 64-bit compiled applications.
This is the first official sidux release after stabilizing and largely rewriting the distribution framework. Further efforts are ongoing to improve the hardware support/detection and streamline the live operations. The distribution is completely based on Debian Sid, enriched and stabilized with sidux packages and scripts. It comes with kernel 2.6.20.1, which is based on the most recent vanilla kernel together with several patches for improved hardware support.
sidux only contains software that meets the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG).
