Zenserver 0.5 QQ

Price: Rp. 20.000

There have been a huge amount of changes since last release. Zenserver 0.5 features the 2.6.19.7 kernel with the GRSecurity patch, Lighttpd, PHP, Mysql, Bind, Postfix, Samba, full development tools, WebLua, and among many other things, ZSAdmin for effective and simple systems administration.

ZSAdmin is capable of: enabling web scripting languages for Lighttpd, system configuration, configuring Inetd, configuring Mysql, and more. I forgot to give this release a code name, but thanks to Borromini it can unofficially be called "Quirky Quetzalcoatl" or "QQ" for short

Zenserver stands out from many other server distributions in a few ways. Very few server distributions are based upon the reliability and simplicity of Slackware. Slackware was built upon the KISS (keep it simple, stupid) principle.

Zenserver will try to follow that principle, while going above and beyond a standard server distribution in many ways. ZS will also strive to use only the best of the best software, but will still have an unsupported set of standard LAMP packages. Not to mention it is completely free and open source :-).

Here are some of Zenservers's main features:
  • Based upon the very reliable .tgz package management system.
  • Uses a 2.6 series Linux kernel with the GRSecurity patch.
  • Lighttpd is the default HTTPD as opposed to Apache. Most distributions ship with Apache as default, and many don't even have a Lighttpd package. Zenserver's ZSAdmin-Lighttpd can configure Lighttpd to use different web scripting languages without the admin even having to edit the configuration file by hand :-). We chose Lighttpd over Apache due to the fact that it is much faster and lighter (many benchmarks prove this). Note: You can still use the normal Apache if you really want or need it. The FAQ covers this with more detail.
  • Security minded permissions. We strive to keep as little folders world-writable as possible, and /root is not accessible by other accounts by default. Permissions can easily be changed, but good, safe out-of-the-box defaults are always preferable.
  • X (GUI) is not included in ZS. X is not necessary for a server and would add to our work load to maintain, so instead we can give you more useful server related packages. Most people that want X on a server want it for ease of use. However, there are not many X front ends to server daemons, so this is generally false. Instead there are easy-to-use `dialog`-based (ncurses) scripts for configuring various aspects of the system. The FAQ covers this with more detail.
  • For power users, we offer excellent console tools such as lftp, mc, elinks, htop, VIM, nano, ADOM (for reliving boredom), ctorrent, and others.
  • Zenserver's updates are frequent, and many times new functionality is added. All updates are designed to not break any aspect of the system, but also give you the new functionality before the next release. Zenserver's modified version of Netpkg (from Zenwalk) has an option for not prompting during updates which makes it much easier to setup automatic updates with.
  • Lots of things are planed for future releases, such as: per-user resource restrictions, easy-to-setup static arp tables, and many other things. See Zenserver Future for more information.

Zenserver is a still a fresh and new distribution. If you would like to see it improve and grow, we could certainly use some help with it. See Help Zenserver if you would like to help out.
