Mythbuntu is an Ubuntu derivative and has been around for less than a year, but they have been making great progress with this MythTV-optimized distribution. 
One of the items that differentiates Mythbuntu from other distributions that just ship with the default MythTV packages is the Mythbuntu Control Center. The Mythbuntu Control Center is broken into System Roles, MythTV Configuration, Applications & Plugins, Proprietary Drivers, Remote Control, System Services, Artwork & Login Behavior, Proprietary Codecs, and Advanced Management.
The "System Roles" area is for managing the different system components such as whether this installation will have a back-end or will be a primary/secondary back-end, whether a MythTV front-end will be used, and whether to provide a GNOME, KDE, or Xfce desktop.
Mythbuntu Control Center also provides an easy way to configure LIRC (Linux Infrared Remote Control). From the "Remote Control" area, a single remote control can be enabled and the remote is chosen from a list of different remotes and then the driver, module(s), and configuration are automatically populated. It's also possible using Mythbuntu Control Center to generate dynamic button maps.
For those that are new to Linux or prefer the easy way of doing things, the Mythbuntu Control Center allows for configuring some services common to MythTV systems. These servers include VNC, SSH, Samba, NFS, and MySQL. For the VNC service, the remote password can also be set from within the control center.
For non-free media codecs, this control center supports installing proprietary codecs from Medibuntu, which is the media team for Ubuntu. The codecs supported are w32codecs, w64codecs, libdvdcss2, and ffmpeg. Read more. ..
