OpenSolaris – open to modifications

OpenSolaris is an open source version of commercial Solaris operating system. This free version is made up of source code for the marketable Solaris operating system and both the versions of the operating system are created on similar source code. So, OpenSolaris is not a limited version of the key Solaris operating system and it is presently an open source version of Solaris.

OpenSolaris comprises of networking components, major kernel, libraries and commands that make up the interior of the Solaris operating surroundings. The advantage with OpenSolaris is the open source distribution from which one can modify and introduce new things into the product and can also share their views with the community.

The license and model adopted by Sun permits the user to redistribute and modify the code in the Solaris operating system, and hence any individual can release self-made Solaris distributions. OpenSolaris is available as an open distribution in the structure of Solaris Express- Community release, to develop the code and design further. Sun has introduced the open source distribution by this free version and hence OpenSolaris product is undergoing improvement significantly.

OpenSolaris is offered as a set of CDs which can be downloaded freely as ISOs to which you can even make changes before installation. Both the x86 and SPARC versions are given with this application. If you want to create your own Solaris operating system, you can download the resource and construct them according to your need to get the preferred Solaris operating system. Depending on your environment and hardware, the entire process may take few hours to a day to get installed completely.
