Install Ubuntu Linux with a Windows application
Kevin Spiess - Monday, January 21st, 2008 | 12:37PM (PT)

Dipping into Linux getting easier and easier with Wubi

One thing that may scare off people from installing Linux is getting messy with boatloaders and hard drive partitions. Or just the simple process of downloading and burning Linux ISO image files might be something that could dissuade a potential Linux user.

Well, installing Linux has now never been easier for Windows users with the beta release of a program called Wubi. Wubi is a Windows-installer for Ubuntu Linux. All you have to do is download the necesary files, then launch the Windows application, and you are ready to dive into Ubuntu.

Also with Wubi, you do not need to worry about setting up, or rearranging, hard drive partitions, which can be a pain.

You can go from here:

In a few easy steps.

That's cool.

iamjoe56,
With all respect, even if you are 56, please give Ubuntu a try running a live CD/DVD distro.
You might regret your previous fears.

In all honesty, installing Ubuntu and most other distros is even more simple and straightforward than installing Windows, as it must be since most users don't actually install Windows anyway. For a straightforward install, just keep clicking "forward", "continue" or "ok", type in a username and password, and reboot...done. Doesn't get much more simple than that. If someone can't handle that, then I seriously doubt "Wubi" or any other cute sounding winapp is going to help much.

Simpler than installing windows? There really isn't anything complicated about installing Windows, well for XP and Vista anyway. I can't remember '98 or '95.

Sounds interesting, and sadly now I'm almost tempted by the idea of that streaming game service mentioned a while back for linux / ubuntu. If they get around to streaming titles online it'd be almost worthwhile to catch it since regardless of my laptop power my desktop will always be ahead.

Thanks for ruining my life now Kevin.

To be Frank, I am not going to touch Ubuntu for 2 reasons, A: This is not my Computer, it is the family PC and B: I have no real use for it. Besides, this computer can't hardly play Dvds anyways. The HArdware sucks that badly.

@DeathMonkey "There really isn't anything complicated about installing Windows"

Maybe not complicated to an au fait user, but it's always a pain in the proverbial. Copy the license key correctly, find and install driver blobs and then sticking all of your anti-ware on.

None of those problems on Linux.

Yeah sure, Copying the Key is hard, has everyone forgotten that you gotta do that with games these days?
